and yes shooting in RAW, except if you are going to have to PRINT in VERY LARGE SIZE … OR …. you need for some reasons to ZOOM IN like crazy on a small part of the photo (like just the eye of one person you are shooting) … OR… if you want to SELL YOUR SHOTS and the clients (or stock website you are seeling on) require EXPLICITELY “RAW”… then short of those reasons I personally do not see any true “need” for shooting RAW instead of JPEG/JPG. Of course you totally CAN shoot RAW if you prefer that… but in 98% of my shoots, I do not…
Also STORAGE and SPEED of PROCESSING WISE whether in LIGHTROOM or PHOTOSHOP or others, the RAW shots’s SIZE might average 40MB or so (versus JPEGS at 6MB or so) so your SPEED of processing/retouching might get very affected by RAW and your personal COST of STORAGE on outside hard drive will be affected to (or your computer’s hard drive being very very quickly overwhelmed! 🙁 ) .
Also in terms of UPLOADING to CLOUD STORAGE or TRANSMISSION to the clients etc…. RAW will take LOTS OF TIME and issues versus JPEGS.
On an average shoot of a HEADSHOT for one of my clients for example, I will shoot anywhere from 80 to 150.
In JPEG that means 900MB or so of storage space… in RAW you are talking about… 6 TERABYTES of storage and processing just for 1 single HEADSHOT/CLIENT…
I hope these few pros and cons will help you decide what is best for you? and for each of your shoots?
